On the other is the Department of Transportation and a 22-mile “public” road that industrial vehicles would access, and degrade, for free as part of their longer industrial route. The state claims each hand is working on a different project. But both hands are operated by the State and paid for by us taxpayers.”

“Allowing and supporting the construction of this taxpayer-funded, half-billion-dollar road would be the first step toward removing the grit and tenacity that true Alaskans share and are proud to characterize ourselves with. It will be the first step toward stripping Alaska of the reason we live here in the first place.”

“AIDEA [Alaska Industrial Development & Export Authority] has a clear track record of failure. They’re more likely to lose money than make it. Why would anyone expect anything different for the West Susitna Industrial Access Road?”

“Can you imagine the size of several gravel pits to fill in the road over mostly wetland? This road cost could easily be redirected to fix the roads in Alaska that we currently have.” 

“Most everyone knows that tourism is second after oil for private-sector jobs and a major income generator for our entire state. A bridge and road will not only let an open-pit mine be established and pollute two major salmon tributaries, it will also have a negative effect on current jobs and economies in this area. These jobs and economies are not just for the next 20 years. They do not destroy the natural beauty of the area, nor do they pollute the watersheds with mine runoff.”
